Luigi Ademollo, Ink Sepia Drawing, St. Ambrogio Encounters the Romans and Emperor Theodosius

$6,895.00

Extremely rare and finely executed hand-done ink and sepia drawing on textured paper by the renowned Italian artist Luigi Ademollo (1764–1849). Admired and collected by museums, Ademollo’s drawings are noted for their extraordinary detail, resembling delicate engravings.

This exceptional piece measures 29 ½” by 24 ½” in the period gilt and walnut frame, with an image size of 23” by 20”. The subject depicts St. Ambrogio’s encounter with the Roman military and Emperor Theodosius before the Massacre of Thessalonica—a scene of profound historical and religious significance. St. Ambrose, known for respecting military authority to maintain order, is here portrayed using his Christian faith to hold both military and emperors accountable.

The artwork is signed, inscribed, and titled by Ademollo, confirming its authenticity. It remains in excellent condition considering its age, with only a modest, careful cleaning performed on the lower area to reveal original script and remove dust. A small diagonal tear is present in the lower center of the title area, but importantly, the drawing has never been laid down, preserving its purity and original texture.

Framed under glass, the piece can be difficult to photograph without reflections, yet it remains a pristine example of Ademollo’s masterful draftsmanship.

Circa early 1820s. A truly unparalleled find for collectors and connoisseurs of fine antique drawings.
